Spokesmen

I'm trying to find someone with the special tools to pull and replace the main bearings on this '57 R25/3. I'd gladly buy/rent them, just like to do things myself and this one has me temporarily stopped on the project.
Any help/hints gladly accepted.

I could buy the tools from Boxerworks.
I know how to use them just too cheap to fork out for them for 1 use. I tried a few of the Vintage BMW networks but nobody seemed willing to send me theirs. I did talk with San Diego BMW and they will pull and install the bearings if I take the crank in.
What's with your R27? Are you restoring it?
My R25 clone is coming back together, I've done everything on it myself from welding patches in the fenders to painting and pinstriping it. It isn't perfect but it's all MINE!
It's at the spend spend spend stage now, $200 for a cam, $400 for wheels and a fortune for the electrics, so I'm trying to ease the pain in my wallet too.
I had an R26 in UK that I bought with a blown engine, cost me all of $10 and I sold it for $30 to a guy who wanted the frame for an R50 engine he had. I could kick myself now but tht's the way with lots of bikes I've owned.
If you want to work on yours I have a good shop and lots of tools.

The R27 was someone else's project and I picked it up midway through. There's a fair number of good parts, I think it's pretty well all there. What it needs most is time.
The engine needs some assembly, I'm forever on the fence about sending it out or doing it myself. I've never been into one of these slinger-equipped bikes but have some mech. skills and resources.
Much as I want to ride it, perhaps I should send the engine to Vech and attend to the remainder myself in the interim.

I finally put a face with the name Brian, we enjoyed a few beers at Club Kensington a few months back, I was the second one there as I recollect, parked next to your smoke S with my white R80ST.

Good on you: sticking up for John on the Airlist regarding Sarge's difficulties with contacting suppliers. I regret missing Gary's tech day, couldn't get away for that one.

The singles are pretty simple except for the special tools to take them apart. I've made most of them and I'm kind of working on the solution to the main bearing removal/installation, what I really need is a lathe for about 20 minutes.
I just had to post on the List after watching John and company work all day on James's bike.
Let me know if you want to help you stare into the R27 parts!
Regards
Brian

I know a couple guys that own proper lathes, could make inquiries if you like.(?)
I'll have to get the proper sized tube sorted out first, too much going on this weekend but I'll have some time during the week. I'll get back to you again when I have it ready if that's good with you?
Things are looking up!
Thanks
Brian

Ok.
I'll talk with the lathe owner(s).
I got the tube sorted out Scott, would your friend with the lathe be able to square off the end of a 2" tube and put a clearance hole for an M8 bolt in the cap I (sort of) welded on?
Thanks

Yes,

Sometime after 3pm between in the next couple days?
PM sent.

Whooo Hooo,
The home made tools worked great Scott! I pulled one main bearing and pressed the new on today. One more to go, I'm thinking up another puller, I'll have to go and look in Home Depot for another piece of bigger tubing. Don't suppose they sell it by the inch!!
Regards,
Brian

That's great news Brian, good to hear it worked as planned. :o)

Speaking of pullers: I tried pulling the cranckcase breather from my toaster yesterday but didn't have a proper tool so my efforts brought no joy... although I did manage to suspend the bike from the rafters so 'no joy but great fun'; it seems I'll have to beg, borrow or fabricate a puller of my own.

I have the reed type upgrade in hand, however the old phenolic pancake flapper appeared to be in good shape. Maybe too much blowby is the root cause of the turkey-gobble noises, will need to do another leak-down test.

Even so, the reed type's superior efficiency may minimize oil escaping through the vent and consequently deserves another go.
